Bassa-Nge

Also known as Bassa Nge

Overview

The Bassa-Nge are a Nupe-related people found mainly in Kogi State, especially around the Bassa and Lokoja areas. They are distinct from other Nigerian groups also called Bassa, including Bassa communities in Plateau and Nasarawa.

Origins and history

Bassa-Nge history is linked to movement and settlement around the Niger-Benue confluence, where Nupe, Igala, Ebira, Hausa and other communities interacted through trade and politics. Their cultural identity reflects both riverine and savanna influences.

Social structure

Bassa-Nge communities are organised through family lineages, village heads, title holders and local chiefs. Farming, fishing and trading households form important parts of social life.

Traditional religion

Traditional beliefs included ancestral veneration and rites connected with land and water. Islam and Christianity are now both present, while customary practices remain visible in family ceremonies and festivals.

Notable customs

Bassa-Nge culture includes riverine occupations, traditional music, dress, marriage rites and local festivals. The Niger-Benue confluence is an important geographic marker of their history.
