Science · b. 1954

Philip Emeagwali is a computer scientist known for parallel-computing work in petroleum reservoir simulation, for which he won a Gordon Bell Prize in 1989.

Overview

Philip Emeagwali is a computer scientist known for parallel-computing work in petroleum reservoir simulation, for which he won a Gordon Bell Prize in 1989. He is Igbo, born at Akure in what is now Ondo State, with family roots in Delta State.

Biography

Emeagwali's schooling was interrupted by the civil war; he later completed qualifications by correspondence and took a scholarship to Oregon State University in the United States, followed by graduate study in mathematics and civil and marine engineering.

His best-documented work applied massively parallel computation to the equations used in petroleum reservoir modelling, running a simulation across the thousands of processors of a Connection Machine and reporting a very high computation rate for that class of problem. That work won a Gordon Bell Prize in 1989 in the price/performance category, an award given by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Wider claims circulated about him in the press and online — including descriptions of him as a father of the internet — have been publicly disputed by parts of the computing community, and this page presents them only as claims made in his public record rather than as settled fact.

Notable achievements

  • Won a Gordon Bell Prize in 1989 for price/performance in high-performance computing
  • Applied massively parallel computation to petroleum reservoir simulation on a Connection Machine
  • Graduate work in mathematics and in civil and marine engineering in the United States
  • Widely cited in Nigerian public discussion of science and computing

Legacy

Emeagwali is one of the most widely named Nigerian scientists in popular discussion at home, and his prize-winning parallel-computing work is documented. The broader claims attached to his name are contested, and any careful account separates the award from those claims.
