Overview
Biography
Ajunwa competed as a sprinter and long jumper and also played football for the national women's team, an unusual combination at that level. She served in the Nigeria Police Force alongside her athletics career.
At the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 she won the long jump with a leap of 7.12 metres on her first attempt in the final, taking gold in a field of established international jumpers. It was the first individual Olympic gold won by a Nigerian, and came in the same games as the football team's gold medal. She had earlier won medals at African championships and All-Africa Games. She continued in the police service after retiring from competition, rising through its ranks, and has spoken publicly about the support available to Nigerian athletes.
